The Lack of Security for Student in Education of Indonesia (4th Writing Task)

            School is one of places to learn many knowledge.  There are many useful things that we can be learnt from school.  Because school is designed to apply education.  It refers to preparing students for life, such as to face the problems of the society.  The knowledge that the students have learned in the school can apply in daily life.  The students can develop their ability to face the real life in the society.  So that school provides the basics for student’s life through by curriculum that has designed by the government.  Formerly, the educational system in Indonesia demands on cognitive aspects.  We can see, there are many schools that demand on values which students get from the test or the assignments.  But, the most important of school is building the character education.  Because no matter how smart we are, it can be nothing if there’s no moral or good character that we belong.

            According to Wikipedia.com, character education is an umbrella term loosely used to describe the teaching of children in a manner that will help them develop variously as moral, civic, good mannered, behaved, non-bullying, healthy, critical, successful, traditional, compliant or socially acceptable beings.  It definitely needs rules to regulate the way of education.  So, there are rules that applied in every school.  In practice, there are definitely violations that cause in the enactment of punishment.  We can see there are many cases that happened in the school.  For example, the teacher who hit his student because of the student didn’t do the homework.  Maybe it was an instant solution that given by the teacher to make the student wary and didn’t repeat anymore.

This bad habitual action is also influenced by the environment, it can be school environment or society environment.  School environment such as the lack of security in the school.  Society environment such as get influence from the people around them.

There are many cases as cause of the lack of security in the school.  We can see nowadays, there are violence and sexual harassment that happened in the world of education in Indonesia.  It wasn’t something that appears to come-arrived.  However, it has appeared for long.  We can see from the activities that usually held every year to welcome new students.  It is called MOS or OSPEK.  It aims to provide debriefing, both material and introduction of school environment.  It is important to help the teaching process and learning process as the main activities.  But unfortunately, in practice, both of those activities precisely the irregularities purpose.  MOS and OSPEK are often used as a platform for the seniors to show their power and seniority.  In this activity, they did a violence and sexual harassment to the junior.  We can take the example of cases of violent from the death of STIP’s students in cause of his senior.  This is caused by the lack of security in that school, and the lack of supervision system.  We can imagine, the school as the place to learn, to protect their students, instead to make the students become victims of violence.

The most tragic is the case of sexual harassment by the cleaning service to a student of kindergarten in an international school.  This case was also happened in the school which should have a strong security.  The students, who should be protected, instead become a victim.  Actually, the security in every school should be made stronger to avoid things that are not desirable, especially in international school.  However, the child should be accompanied by a teacher when they go to the toilet.  And the toilet shouldn’t be far from the class.  So that the teacher can still monitor the situation of them.

From the cases above, we can learn that the teacher and especially the parents have a very important role in the growth of children.  They should be guided them right, so that character education is needed.  It helps in developing of good values, like truth, sympathy, honestly, love, and so on.  Through the moral teachings, it spreads the message of goodness for living in the society.  The physical punishment must be banned as an instant solution.  Because it will not educate them.  It needs communication that should be done by teacher and parents.
